Pedro Oliveira created a social network for patients
Pedro Oliveira and his team are developing a social network where anyone will be able to share experiences about a disease that someone may have. The aim is, above all, mutual assistance and sharing of knowledge. This platform is being developed by a total of 50 researchers from Germany, Austria, Italy, Brazil, United States and Portugal. It is based user innovation and is financed by the German foundation Pribilla Peter, the Foundation for Science and Technology and the partnership programs between Portugal and by the Universities of Carnegie Mellon (CMU) and MIT.

“Finding people to the business is a big challenge”
One of the biggest challenges for technology startups is “to find people for business,” said Reed McManigle, manager of business development at the Center for Technology Transfer and Enterprise Creation of Carnegie Mellon University. It is about discovering executives willing to take the risk of developing a business of a small firm with an innovation. Probably it is “perhaps more difficult than to arrange financing,” said McManigle in a conference promoted by Carnegie Mellon Portugal program.

Carnegie Mellon Portugal debates Innovation and Entrepreneurship
“Innovation and Entrepreneurship in ICT: The Paths to Commercialization” is the main topic for an informal conversation between national and international guests. Tomorrow, at the Pavilion of Knowledge, in Lisbon, it will be shared stories in the first person of entrepreneurs who made (or are making) technology transfer from the university to the market, and also to discuss the challenges of intellectual property management, putting together the perspectives from Portuguese and American academia with the several businesses.

Interview with Susana Sargento, researcher at the Universidade de Aveiro and one of the principal investigators of the project which aims to improve user experience and the overall efficiency of vehicle and road utilization through a pioneer vehicle-to-vehicle communication system. DRIVE-IN was developed by researchers of the Universidade de Aveiro, Universidade do Porto and Carnegie Mellon University, as part of the CMU Portugal program.

MAIS+S Project: Follow the Robot
Article about the research project MAIS+S lead by Francisco Melo, from the ISR-L, and Manuela Veloso, from CMU. The project addresses the problem of planning in decentralized multi-agent systems in the context of intelligent surveillance networks. As a first result of this project it was created a robot called “Duke”, that it is being tested at the ISR in Lisbon.

The MAIS+S project is carried out in the scope of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, and involves researchers from INESC ID, Instituto Superior Técnico of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, ISR Lisboa, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and the company Observit, Lda.
