Overview

As part of its mission, the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program (CMU Portugal) aims to be at the forefront of innovation in focused areas of information and communication technologies (ICT), by building a strong innovation ecosystem through a close link between academic institutions, Portuguese industry, and Carnegie Mellon University.

Over 120 companies have been actively engaged with the initiatives of the Program. CMU Portugal has also provided conditions and opportunities for several  faculty members, students and alumni to create their own entrepreneurial initiatives, resulting so far in the launching of  12 startups.

Furthermore the innovation component of the Program has also been supported by initiatives such as inRes – Entrepreneurship in Residence, an early stage acceleration program that counted in its four editions, with the participation of 14 teams, 10 of which are already established as companies.

The third phase of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program aims at promoting an ecosystem of innovation in Portuguese cities, benefitting from Carnegie Mellon’s experience as a dynamic economic engine in the Pittsburgh region and also the new collaborative opportunities in the recently established Campus in Silicon Valley. The industry alignment that permeates the activities of this third phase, together with the successful experience of Carnegie Mellon in the Pittsburgh region, comprise the ideal setting for the consolidation of several Portuguese cities as worldwide innovation and technology hubs.
