Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering

This Ph.D. Program is currently inactive.

The Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), through its Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE) offers a dual degree Ph.D. in Mechanics together with the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra through the following departments: Departments of Mechanical Engineering (DEM-FCTUC) and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC-FCTUC).

Students participating in this program will be enrolled in the PhD Programs of (i) the CMU MechE Deartment and (ii) Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology (DEM-FCTUC). The associated degree at DEM-FCTUC will be a “Doutor em Engenharia Mecânica”, for which the research work will take in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering (DEM-FCTUC), Eletrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC-FCTUC), and associated research centers, namely ISR – Institute of Systems and Robotics of the University of Coimbra (ISR-UC).

The Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering prepares students for careers in research and academia. Some of the main research areas are: Additive manufacturing, air quality, cellular biomechanics, computational design, DNA origami, energy conversion and storage, nanoscale manufacturing, soft robotics, transdermal drug delivery, and transport phenomena.
