João Claro is the New Leader of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program
João Claro, researcher and coordinator at INESC TEC unit and professor in the Faculdade de Engenharia of the Universidade do Porto (FEUP), is the new national director of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program. The researcher takes on the leadership of this international partnership, funded by the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, which is now entering its second phase until 2017. João Claro succeeds João Barros, national director until the end of December 2012.

REAP.PT Project: Researchers Develop Technology to Help Teaching Portuguese to Foreigners Researchers from the REAP.PT project, carried out in the scope of the CMU Portugal Program, developed a technology which helps foreigners to better learn Portuguese. Nuno Mamede, researcher at the research lab INESC ID, explained that the REAP.PT prototype is being tested at the Universidade do Algarve. The project finished last year and involved researchers from INESC-ID, Instituto Superior Técnico of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, Universidade do Algarve, Carnegie Mellon, and the company Porto Editora.

The Portuguese Incubators and Internationalization
Extended article on entrepreneurship, and on the number of incubators that continues to increase in Portugal, with the challenge to create international links. The article as several examples, namely the Carnegie Mellon Portugal program, which has now been extended for another five years, involves nine Portuguese universities, four laboratories, the CMU and 80 companies. Many of these companies are startups, and students benefit from the network of contacts of this prestigious American university.

VENIAM Spin-off Wins ISCTE-IUL MIT Portugal Competition

VENIAM, a spin-off from University of Aveiro (DETI), University of Porto and Telecommunications Institute, won the award for entrepreneurship in the 3rd edition of ISCTE-IUL MIT Portugal Ventures Competition in the transportation and energy area. VENIAM’s products are based on several years of research and development of two research teams, one led by Susana Sargento, professor in the University of Aveiro, and João Barros, professor in the University of Porto, both researchers at the Institute of Telecommunications. The teams have been working together in these areas for several years in research projects such as the Drive-In, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through the Carnegie Mellon Portugal program.
