Carnegie Mellon Portugal Gathers Researchers and Entrepreneurs in an Inaugural Symposium

The Carnegie Mellon Portugal program will hold an Inaugural Symposium for the second phase of the partnership on Monday, Jan. 21 in Instituto Superior Técnico of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, in Portugal. Titled “Carnegie Mellon Portugal: An Entrepreneurial University-Industry Ecosystem in ICT”, the event will gather researchers, entrepreneurs and students to discuss the strategic areas for the next five years. João Claro, national director of the partnership, explained to the Portuguese news agency Lusa that the key areas of work are related to the Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives, which intend to promote a more solid “bridge between science and market, to stimulate the creation and exploitation of TestBeds, and to encourage researchers to carry out interdisciplinary research.”

Researchers Develop Communication System Between Vehicles to Reduce Accidents
Researchers at the Institute of Telecommunications and at the Universidade do Porto carried out a research project that determines how the digital wireless communications between vehicles can improve driving safety and efficiency in traffic . The See-Through System ( STS) was explained to Lusa using the analogy of a mirror to aid the driver. ” We want to design something like a mirror, but that allows us to see the road in the front of a truck or bus that follows ahead ,” said the principal investigator of the project . The work is one of the outcomes of the DRIVE -IN project , funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, as part of the international partnership program Carnegie Mellon Portugal .

They Tested the Google Glass in Portugal
The Google Glass was presented to doctoral students of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal ( Portugal CMU ) and of the Universidade do Porto. These augmented reality glasses are not yet available In the market, but some units were assigned to individuals selected by Google . The Google Glass, which was tested on Saturday, October 19 , was delivered to Ricardo Cabral , a student who is doing her PhD at the Instituto Superior Técnico and at the Carnegie Mellon University , USA, in the scope of the partnership CMU Portugal ( therefore the designation of “dual degree” ), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology . The event hosted at the INESC Porto , Porto, also served to welcome the new students and to challenge researchers at the University of Porto to participate in the challenge of developing applications for the device.
