João Claro, the National Director of the CMU Portugal Program, speaks about the strategy and main instruments of the Program’s Phase II, the main achievements of Phase I, and invites faculty members and prospective students to seek for an opportunity within the Program. Since its inception, in 2006, the Program’s mission is to create new knowledge in key focused areas of information and communication technologies by means of cutting-edge research, world-class graduate education and a close connection with the Portuguese industry, thus placing Portugal at the forefront of Science and Innovation.

Autonomous Cars: Nissan brings new models by 2020

The Japanese company estimates that in 2020 can provide a range of autonomous vehicles. The company plans to have up to two generations available and affordable. The announcement was made by the CEO of Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, who explained that there is an ongoing program in Japan to build the first floors dedicated to this type of vehicles and that Nissan is collaborating with top universities like MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, Oxford or the University of Tokyo in developing these cars.

The European Researchers’ Night registered a record of participants, at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento, in Lisbon (…) The role of partnerships in innovation was a common feature of the technology presented at the event. Francisco Melo, from the Institute for Systems and Robotics, IST, showed a robot developed in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Another prototype already wanders in the halls of CMU, a concept the researcher calls “symbiotic autonomy”. The robot receive guests or helps at meetings.

The Faculty Exchange Program launched by the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program has already sent 46 researchers to the U.S., allowing them to teach and do research at the institution. This number will increase to 49 next semester.

IST provides Google Glass to people and companies with ideas for applications
The Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, presented on Friday a program to allow access to a Google Glass, the augmented reality glasses developed by Google, to students, researchers and companies who have an idea to develop an application. The glasses of the Instituto Superior Técnico were delivered to a student who is taking a Ph.D. at the IST and at the Carnegie Mellon University, USA, as part of a partnership between the two institutions.

Security highlighted on the JavaOne conference
The lectures planned for the next annual JavaOne conference include topics such as “Java malware” and “security improvements in JRE (Java Runtime Environment)”, which shows that the company is aware of the bad reputation that it software has acquired in recent years.
