The Global Startup Program – powered by the IC² Institute at The University of Texas at Austin- began in 2013 with the mission to provide business development, soft-landing, incubation, and acceleration opportunities to Portuguese technology-based companies. Its purpose is to assist the success of Portuguese entrepreneurial endeavors in different phases of development:

1. Early stage startup ventures: typically based on a technology that is under development, no sales, and ambitions to move to the United States to obtain funding, development and commercialization roadmaps.

2. More mature ventures, typically with sales in domestic markets, that desire to initiate the internationalization process in the United States and other international markets.

Although Austin is the central doorway to the North American market, the Institute makes use of its network to reach other points of market entry as appropriate to each company. The CEO, co-founders, and leaders of these ventures should have the capacity to support travel and accommodation in the United States for short term stays (typically 1 to 2 weeks long when needed) to work with the Global Startup Team. For companies that wish to have a constant presence in Austin – encouraged, but not mandatory – office space next to the Austin Technology Incubator (ATI) is provided for free during the first year enrollment in the program.

This program builds on the experience from the past edition of US Connect in 2011 and 2013 that has produced excellent results for Portuguese startups such as Bioalvo, Feedzai, Technophage, Innovapotek, Tecla Colorida, Tuizzi, Omniflow, Auditmark, Abyssal, and Celfinet, both in terms of business development, incubation, and closure of deals.

This second edition will be open to companies in all technology sectors with ambitions to reach US and world markets.

1st edition of Novabase GameShifters Kicks Off With a 24-Hour Marathon

Gameshifters image “Shaping the way we live” is the motto of the Novabase GameShifters, a competition where participants will create new solutions that can change public services and make the lives of citizens simpler. The deadline to submit applications is April 30, and the competition will be taking place on May 9.

Improving the relationship between citizens and public services is the goal of the 1st edition of the Novabase GameShifters competition. The idea is to show how the solutions developed can make the lives of citizens using these services simpler. The competing ideas can be presented in various formats, such as storyboards, slides, videos, wireframes, physical prototypes or apps, as long as they take into consideration the integration and use range of public services. The solutions should be unique in their functionality, usability and feasibility features.

The two ideas chosen as the most innovative solutions presented will be competing to receive prizes up to €8,000, as well as training in Design Thinking and consulting to create Crowdfunding projects (for each element of the winning teams).

The projects will be evaluated according to their business potential, degree of sophistication, level of innovation, technical implementation and/or maturity, as well as the interest demonstrated by participants in the theme and the challenges addressed during the competition.

Participants will have 24 hours to give form to their idea and to demonstrate how that solution can change the lives of citizens – because at Novabase technology only makes sense if it improves people’s lives.

The Novabase GameShifters competition will start at 8 pm on May 9, and there’s room for about 250 participants to compete during a 24-hour marathon. All participants should be over 18 years of age and they can enter the competition individually or in teams. Teams should have no more than 4 members.

Applications should be submitted on the website of Novabase GameShifters until 11:59 pm of April 30. The Regulations for the initiative are also available on the website. If you are interested in participating, you can keep up with the latest information about Novabase GameShifters on Facebook and on Twitter.

Portugal Ventures Launches 7th Call for Entrepreneurship

Portugal Ventures 7th Edition Submissions to the 7th Call For Entrepreneurship starts on April 28 until 29 May, 2014. This initiative facilitates the access of innovative scientific and technology-based projects to seed and start-up investment. Portugal Ventures has already invested, as a result of the previous calls, in more than 25 start-ups with the ambition to become companies of excellence on the global market.

Pre-reto seed and start-up investment. Portugal Ventures has already invested, as a result of the previous calls, in more than 25 start-ups with the ambition to become companies of excellence on the global market.

Projects in sectors such as Information and Communication Technologies, Electronics and WEB, Life Sciences, Tourism, Endogenous Resources, Nanotechnologies and Materials are eligible for investment. Selected projects will benefit from a capital investment of up to 750 thousand Euros, with a maximum of 85% of each project’s total funding needs. Entrepreneurs can gain from the support and guidance of one of the entities from the Call’s Ignition Partners Network, in the preparation and qualification of their project, making it investment ready.

Projects submitted to the Call will be evaluated by assessment panels made up of both national and international experts in business and technology, as well as investors from the Ignition Capital Network, business angels and other venture capital, who may co-invest together with Portugal Ventures in the selected projects. Portugal Ventures will select the projects which show the greatest potential for growth and the ability to become start-ups of excellence, on a global scale. The projects invested in will benefit from the advice of specialists, preferentially international experts, with accumulated experience and a vast network of relevant contacts. These projects may also be given the opportunity to be incubated and accelerated at the centres for the Portuguese entrepreneurship ecosystem in San Francisco, “Portugal Ventures in the Bay”, and in Boston, “Portugal Ventures in Boston”.

During the previous six Calls for Entrepreneurship more than 1600 entrepreneurs registered on the Portugal Ventures website, resulting in the submission of more than 500 projects. The commitment and encouragement given by the entities from the Ignition Partners Network contributed to this success – the network currently boasts 40 national scientific and technology-based entities from the entrepreneurship ecosystem. The Call For Entrepreneurship is the entry point to the Ignition Programme, an initiative spearheaded by Portugal Ventures and which is an integral part of the +e+i Programme (more entrepreneurship, more innovation). The objective of this programme is to bolster the Portuguese technology-based entrepreneurship ecosystem, thus contributing to the development of a more modern and competitive economy, open to the world, based on knowledge, innovation and highly qualified human capital, with a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

Through this initiative, Portugal Ventures aims to invest around 20 million Euros, per year. Some of the venture capital funds managed by Portugal Ventures are co-financed by the European Union through FINOVA, managed by PME Investimentos, COMPETE and POR LISBOA.
