Enabling Innovation in Companies

“CMU Portugal Program: Enabling Innovation in Companies” is the theme of the two events with companies that the CMU Portugal Program will hold on November 6 and 7 , at Porto Business School (PBS) and at Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics (CLSBE) , respectively. Companies that have actively participated in the CMU Portugal Program, such as CGI, OutSystems, Geolink, Wavecom, among others, have already confirmed their presence.

The main goal of these events is to leverage and strengthen the participation of companies in the different initiatives offered by the CMU Portugal Program , funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). Since 2006, the year of its inception, more than 90 companies have been benefiting from the international ecosystem of education, research and innovation in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) created by the Program. The Program brings together faculty members, researchers, doctoral and master students, business executives, startup managers, and senior staff of innovation and entrepreneurship support organisations, from both sides of the Atlantic (Portugal and United States). (Information about the impact of the partnership is available here.)

One of the highlights of these events will be the presentation of opportunities for companies on the 2 nd call for Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives (ERIs) , which will remain open until December 16, 2014. ERIs are multidisciplinary innovation projects, and require the active involvement of one or more companies. The proposals must have at least two partner Portuguese research institutions, belonging to distinct higher education institutions, their institutes and research centers, from different Portuguese Universities, Carnegie Mellon University, and at least one company.

In the first call the overall level of industry participation and commitment was especially significant. More than 50 companies participated in the consortia, some in multiple proposals, with more than 60 participations. The level of commitment totaled over 3 million Euros in the 21 proposals, and over 1 million Euros in the six proposals recommended for funding. Companies like Embraer, Microsoft, and Novartis, among others, are deeply involved in these Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives .

The Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives are projects in science, engineering, management and policy that integrate activities in research, innovation, advanced education and training of human resources, with industry collaboration and emphasis on the commercialization of technology for real world impact.

CISTER Distinguished Seminar Series: Design of Future Integrated Systems: A Cyber-physical Systems Approach

Professor Radu Marculescu Speaker: Professor Radu Marculescu, Carnegie Mellon University, USA
Date: July 1, 2014 (Tuesday)
Time: 14h30
Venue: Auditorium, CISTER, ISEP (Rua Alfredo Allen, 535, 4200-135 Porto, Portugal)

Abstract:

In this talk, we address some fundamental issues related to the modelling and optimization of power and performance of next generation of integrated systems while taking a cyber-physical approach. As such, the focus of the design methodology is not only on establishing a reliable communication infrastructure between the computational elements, but also on including time, communication, and feedback-based control as intrinsic components of the programming model; this goal allows us generalize the classical computational paradigm such that more direct interaction between the cyber-system and physical world becomes possible.

Starting from these overarching ideas, we argue that the complex requirements for high-performance and low-power design, as well as reliable and safe operation of future integrated systems call for a truly multidisciplinary approach which brings together concepts and techniques from real-time computing and signal processing, multiprocessor architecture and OS design, as well as distributed and self-organized control.

Research Workshop on “Embraer in Europe”: A new Research Framework through Carnegie Mellon Portugal

Research Workshop on “Embraer in Europe”: A new Research Framework through Carnegie Mellon Portugal
Organized in the scope of the Technology, Management and Policy Graduate Consortium

Date: June 25, 2014
Hour: 14:00 – 21:00
url: http://in3.dem.ist.utl.pt/tmp2014/index.asp
Registration: http://in3.dem.ist.utl.pt/tmp2014/participants_registration.asp

This Entrepreneurial Research Initiative (ERI) looks at the increasing complexity and uncertainty of technological advances and related value chains and business configurations in modern aeronautics. It is motivated by the recent installation of two new Embraer plants in Évora, Portugal. It has the ultimate goal of securing their role as centers of excellence in aeronautics, with unique characteristics within the Embraer Group and worldwide. Evora’s plants are a singular case: although being fully owned by Embraer a Junes OEM, both plants work as first tier suppliers of the Mother-Company, Embraer S.A., in Brazil.

This requires the full integration of their activities within the needs of Embraer S.A. while also keeping a competitive edge with respect to other suppliers in Embraer’s supply chains. Nowadays, ICT is crucial across industries in addressing supply chains issues between manufacturers and their suppliers.

ICT systems are essential to anticipating problems and opportunities in the supply chain management, supporting decision-making at four levels:

i) identification, capacitation and qualification of new technology based suppliers (for specialized products and services);

ii) monitoring suppliers performance in order to pro-actively address risky situations or opportunities, such as variations in production pace;

iii) monitoring the industry and

iv) assessing network effects that endanger or synergize the supply chain.

Thus, this project focuses on managing large data sets and ICT-based logistic platforms among OEMs and suppliers. In addition, it will focus on the creation, integration and development of new technology based firms in the value chain of the aeronautics sector that can serve as key economic agents to foster and facilitate technological innovations. The emphasis will be on value-added platforms to facilitate the necessary technological advances including opportunities for new employment and skills development and their impact on regional development.
