Enabling Innovation in Companies

“CMU Portugal Program: Enabling Innovation in Companies” is the theme of the two events with companies that the CMU Portugal Program will hold on November 6 and 7 , at Porto Business School (PBS) and at Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics (CLSBE) , respectively. Companies that have actively participated in the CMU Portugal Program, such as CGI, OutSystems, Geolink, Wavecom, among others, have already confirmed their presence.
The main goal of these events is to leverage and strengthen the participation of companies in the different initiatives offered by the CMU Portugal Program , funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). Since 2006, the year of its inception, more than 90 companies have been benefiting from the international ecosystem of education, research and innovation in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) created by the Program. The Program brings together faculty members, researchers, doctoral and master students, business executives, startup managers, and senior staff of innovation and entrepreneurship support organisations, from both sides of the Atlantic (Portugal and United States). (Information about the impact of the partnership is available here.)
One of the highlights of these events will be the presentation of opportunities for companies on the 2 nd call for Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives (ERIs) , which will remain open until December 16, 2014. ERIs are multidisciplinary innovation projects, and require the active involvement of one or more companies. The proposals must have at least two partner Portuguese research institutions, belonging to distinct higher education institutions, their institutes and research centers, from different Portuguese Universities, Carnegie Mellon University, and at least one company.
In the first call the overall level of industry participation and commitment was especially significant. More than 50 companies participated in the consortia, some in multiple proposals, with more than 60 participations. The level of commitment totaled over 3 million Euros in the 21 proposals, and over 1 million Euros in the six proposals recommended for funding. Companies like Embraer, Microsoft, and Novartis, among others, are deeply involved in these Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives .
The Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives are projects in science, engineering, management and policy that integrate activities in research, innovation, advanced education and training of human resources, with industry collaboration and emphasis on the commercialization of technology for real world impact.
