The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) is awarding grants for USA speakers to participate in seminars and conferences in Portugal. Applications must be individual and submitted online here.

Applications must include the folllowing:

– The event’s schedule;

– The foreseen budget detailing expenses and financing received, mentioning the co-sponsors;

– Brief biographical note of the USA speaker.

“Bolsas R&D@PhD” – Call 2016

The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) is accepting applications for research internship grants at USA institutions, in an effort to strengthen the academic and research network between Portugal and USA.

The internships should focus on innovative technological and scientific themes and shall also contribute to improve the network of knowledge between the Portugal and American Institutions, thus facilitating the development of institutional partnerships. Applications must be individual and submitted online here.

Candidates must comply to the following requirements:

– Portuguese nationality or residency;

– Hold a position of doctoral student in a Portuguese Higher Education Institution and / or research center;

– Submit an internship work plan;

– Submit a recommendation letter from the Portuguese Host Institution;

– Submit an acceptance letter by the American Host Institution where the internship will take place;

– Submit a budget, detailing the foreseen costs and the financing sources that the candidate has or will apply to, for the stay in USA.

Application deadlines for oral presentations in USA conferences beginning in:

Internships beginning between January 1 and June 30, 2016:

· Applications: until October 31, 2015.

· Results: until December 31, 2015.

Internships beginning between July 1 and December 31, 2016:

· Applications: until April 30, 2016.

· Results: until June 30, 2016.

The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) is awarding grants for oral presentations at USA conferences, to foster the internationalization of the scientific knowledge produced in Portugal. The grants will not cover poster presentations. Applications must be individual and submitted online here.

Candidates must comply to the following requirements:

– Portuguese nationality or residency;

– English language proficiency;

– Hold a position of doctoral student, professor or researcher in a Portuguese Higher Education Institution and / or research center;

– Submit a letter of recommendation from the Portuguese Host Institution;

– Submit a proof of acceptance to present at the conference, issued by the event’s organization (if this document is not yet available at the time of application, the candidate will have 30 days after the call’s deadline to submit it).

TechDays Aveiro is a two-day event designed to promote the Information Technology, Communications and Electronics (ICTE) sector and uphold its importance to Portugal’s economy, organized by the Telecommunications Institute (IT) in collaboration with the University of Aveiro (UA), the National Portuguese ICT Cluster (TICE.PT), Companies Association for an Innovation Network (INOVARIA) and the Municipality of Aveiro. The event will involve research and development centers, industry partners and higher education institutions.

During the two days, the event will feature conferences and debates, demonstrations of technology produced in the national R&D centers, a poster exhibition and a technology trade show dedicated to the ICTE industry. The Smart Cities platform will also host a technological exhibition.

The 10 th National Conference on Telecommunications (Conftele 2015) will be happening in paralel at the same venue. Conftele is an international forum for information exchange among universities, research units, service providers, operators and manufacturers, on the recent technical issues in the telecommunications industry.

Portugal Ventures has launched a new initiative to promote investment for market-oriented scientific and technological projects in the Seed Capital phase, the Ignition Programme.

The Ignition Programme’s main goals are to reinforce the Portuguese entrepreneurship ecosystem by improving the link between entrepreneurs, R&D centres, incubators, industry experts and Venture Capital; and help highlight the value of scientific and technological knowledge and use of its potential to change the structure of the Portuguese economy and to increase its competitiveness.

By participating in the Programme, the selected projects will have access to the following:

  • Contact with the Ignition Partners Network – preparation of application to be investment ready, coaching and incubation;
  • Assignment of a significant majority of the start-up share capital to its founders;
  • Expert mentoring of the projects funded by Portugal Ventures, by both national and international experts;
  • The opportunity to be accelerated or incubated in international hubs of innovation;
  • Periodic Calls/Cycles of investment (see the calendar).

The 20 th edition of the Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP 2015) is organized by the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL – SIGDAT), a special interest group on linguistic data and corpus-based approaches to NLP. It is one of the main forums in which the scientists in the language technologies area disseminate their cutting-edge research work.

The local organization team includes not only staff from Instituto Superior Técnico, but also representatives from its spin-off community (Priberam and Unbabel), and its research institutes (INESC-ID and IT). In fact, one of the two local Chairs is André Martins, who was the first dual degree student of the Portugal Carnegie Mellon program in Language Technologies.

This event is part of a series of conferences on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing, established as one of the main forums in which the scientists in the language technologies area disseminate their cutting-edge research work.

The program schedule includes invited talks by some of the world’s best known researchers in the area: Yoshua Bengio, who will talk about neural language models, and the recent impressive results on machine translation and on mapping an image to a sentence, and Justin Grimmer, who will discuss how elected officials and constituents communicate, and show how representation style affects American politics.

The first two days of the conference will be devoted to 7 parallel workshops and 8 tutorials. The list of tutorials also highlights the growing impact of this type of data driven approaches on topics such as personality analytics, semantic similarity, information extraction, knowledge acquisition from the web, social media text analysis, learning semantics from text, multiword expressions, and affect and emotion.
