COTEC Organizes Sessions about the COHiTEC Program

Cohitec COTEC Portugal is organizing several Presentation Sessions of COHiTEC 2014 – a training program in technology commercialization aimed at researchers who are willing to develop a business based on the technologies they have developed. The presentation sessions will take place between October and December in Aveiro, Braga, Caparica, Faro, Guimarães, Lisboa, Oeiras, Porto and Vila Real.

In 2014, the COHiTEC Program will take place between March and June, with two editions: one in Oporto (Porto Business School) and another in Lisbon (INDEG-IUL ISCTE Business School). Throughout the Program, researchers will have access to training in technology commercialization, support by management students from the two associated Business Schools and weekly mentoring by executives.
COHiTEC is held in partnership with the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) and the North Carolina State University.

Now in its 11th Edition, COHiTEC has supported 123 projects since its inception, proposed by 427 researchers, and gave rise to 23 technology-based companies with global focus.

The deadline for application to the COHiTEC Program is the 8th of January 2014 and the application form is available on www.cohitec.com.

Working Session: Supporting Technology Commercialization in International Partnerships

Working Session: Supporting Technology Commercialization in International Partnerships Co-organized by UTEN Portugal and the CMU Portugal Program
Date: October 29, 2013
Venue: Room República, Alfândega do Porto
Registration: To attend please send an email to event@cmuportugal.org with your name and affiliation.

With the globalization of Science, international partnerships for Research, Development, and Innovation have become increasingly common, presenting new and significant challenges to the management of Intellectual Property (IP). In the first part of this working session we will share and discuss best practices and case studies of joint management of IP in the context of international collaborations.

These collaborations have also created new opportunities to expand the support that university ecosystems can provide to new high-tech ventures. The Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program will soon re-launch its Entrepreneurship in Residence initiative, aiming at supporting very early stage entrepreneurial teams through a combination of immersion in CMU’s highly dense and dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem, with the support of Portuguese entrepreneurial ecosystems. In the second part of this working session we will present and open to discussion the key ideas for this initiative.

Workshops on Communicating Science with the Media

Workshops on Communicating Science with the Media
Communication of science and research is increasingly more relevant to society, researchers and institutions. Funding bodies (including the European Union and FCT) are aware of the importance of communicating the outcomes of the public investment in science and technology. Equally relevant is the discussion around the implications that advances in science and technology have in citizen’s day-to-day life.

As one of the main actors in scientific research and in communication, scientists should engage in public discussion of their work, both through the media and through direct interactions with different audiences.

To contribute for a more effective communication of the researchers work near the media, the international partnership programs Carnegie Mellon Portugal, Harvard Medical School – Portugal Program, MIT Portugal, UT Austin-Portugal, and the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) are organizing a series of three one-day training workshops on media skills for researchers and Ph.D. students.

These workshops on communicating with the media aim to:

  • Raise awareness amongst participating scientists of the importance of communicating their research with non-specialized audience, via the media;
  • Enthuse and equip scientists with the basic skills and techniques for fruitful media interactions;
  • Raise awareness of how the media works, via interactions and discussion with working Portuguese science reporters.

    Dates

  • Porto – October, 11th
  • Coimbra – November, 25 (new date)
  • Lisbon – December, 6th

    Topics to be addressed

  • What should you do when a journalist calls?
  • How to identify a news story
  • How to write a press release
  • Practical guidance on interacting with the media
  • How to prepare for an interview (radio/press/ broadcast)

    Target audience

  • The workshops are targeted at 3rd and 4th year PhD Students (closer to potential interactions with the media) and faculty members of the international partnerships. Each workshop shall take a maximum of 20 participants (5 per international partnership).

    Application and selection process
Please apply via our Google form.
Applications are open for Porto until September 20th ; for Coimbra until October 18th; and for Lisbon until November 22nd. The registration should be complemented by an up-to-date C.V. This should be sent to the following e-mail: sciencecommunication.workshops@gmail.com . The heads of communication of the international partnerships and FCT will select five applications per partnership based on the motivation statement and CV.

Seminar at Porto Business School: Going From Technology Innovation to Sustainable Business Success

Seminar at Porto Business School: Going From Technology Innovation to Sustainable Business Success
    Date: September 17, 2013
    Venue: Porto Business School

Speaker: Dr. Nikhil Balram, President and CEO, Ricoh Innovations Corporation, Menlo Park, CA
Nikhil Balram is President and CEO of Ricoh Innovations Corporation (ric.ricoh.com), a Silicon Valley company that develops innovative technologies and creates new businesses for Ricoh Company Ltd. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Balram is widely hailed throughout the industry and academia as an expert and innovator in video and display technologies across multiple platforms and has been an officer of several publicly listed companies. He has won numerous awards including a 2012 Gold Stevie® Award for Executive of the Year in the Electronics category in The 9th Annual International Business Awards, a 2012 Fellow Award by the Society for Information Display (SID) and the 2011 Alumni Achievement Award by Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Balram is an adjunct professor of electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, visiting professor of vision science at the University of California, Berkeley, a guest professor of design and innovation at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Gandhinagar, India, and serves on the Industry Advisory Board (IAB) at the School of Engineering at Santa Clara University. He has over 50 US patents granted or pending and more than 30 technical publications. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

    Abstract:
Technology innovation is usually a necessary foundation for success in high-tech industries. But it does not guarantee sustainable long-term commercial success. Going from technology innovation to sustainable business success is often a long and complex process with a low probability of success. The seminar will discuss this process and highlight strategies that have worked well and potential pitfalls that should be avoided. The presentation will be in the form of four case studies from the speaker’s own experiences. Two of these cases are in semiconductor and one of them is in consumer electronics. The fourth and most recent one is in mobile and cloud software and is a work in progress. For each of the cases, the presentation will explain the underlying technology innovations, the market and business situations at the time, the decisions that were made and the outcomes that resulted. The audience will be invited to discuss the wisdom and validity of the decisions that were made and what they might have done differently and why.
Free entrance. Please confirm your registration with cimagem@pbs.up.pt .
