The Lisbon Machine Learning Summer School (LxMLS) takes place yearly at Instituto Superior Técnico, with CMU support. LxMLS 2024 will be a 6-day event, scheduled to take place from July 11th to the 17th as an in-person event.
This event is addressed to researchers and graduate students in the fields of NLP and Computational Linguistics, computer scientists (interested in statistics and machine learning), industry practitioners who desire a more in-depth understanding of these subjects.
The school covers a range of machine learning topics, from theory to practice, that are important in solving natural language processing problems arising in different application areas. It is organized jointly by Instituto Superior Técnico, the Instituto de Telecomunicações, the Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID), the Lisbon ELLIS Unit for Learning and Intelligent Systems (LUMLIS), Unbabel, Zendesk, and IBM Research.

The LxMLS counts with several CMU Portugal Faculty members and alumns. André Martins is a CMU Portugal Alum, currently working as VP of AI Research at Unbabel, a CMU Portugal Industrial Affiliated company; Zita Marinho, is a Research Scientist at DeepMind and a Dual Degree Ph.D. alumna in Computer Science/Robotics (Técnico I CMU Robotics Institute); Isabel Trancoso, CMU Portugal Faculty & Researcher (Técnico I INESC ID) will be part of the steering Committee joining Fernando Pereira, member from the CMU Portugal External Review Committee, and the Google (USA) Vice President and Engineering Fellow.
The event will count with Carnegie Mellon University faculty Bhiksha Raj, from the Language Technologies Institute of Carnegie Mellon University, who was already part of the LxMLS 2023’s edition and participating for the first time, Albert Gu, Assistant Professor at the Machine Learning Department.
