I got a Bachelors’s degree in Computer Science from the Nova School of Science and Technology. While pursuing my Master’s I got introduced to machine learning and its uses for conversational chatbots, which I got interested in. During that period I was also invited to be part of a project on the subject of language generation. During my Ph.D., I hope to improve language generation approaches and to help break the human-machine gap on conversational agents.

Diogo is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Electrical and Computer Engineering at FCT NOVA. He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from FCT NOVA. His research interests lie in the areas of stochastic processes applied to computer and data science, wireless mobile networks, and network modelling.

Born in Brazil, I got a degree in Mechatronics Engineering at the University of BrasÃlia (UnB). However, I enjoyed the Computer Science part more than the others, especially the more mathematical side, so I decided to pursue a Masters’s in Computer Science at UnB. I chose to apply for the CMU/Portugal Ph.D. as the next step in my academic career and was fortunately accepted.

I am a passionate AI researcher and entrepreneur, interested in finding solutions for real-world problems. My experiences in academia and in the startup world enabled me to combine scientific methods with problem-oriented strategies to find solutions that bring value to society. I am a co-founder of TalkMeUp and have led the product and research development during my time as CTO. My experiences in academia helped me to identify cutting edge technology that can serve customers to improve their communication skills through automatic feedback. During my PhD journey, I have developed algorithms that can detect stress from facial expressions, enthusiasm in public speaking, and emotions combining attributes from gestures, facial expressions and vocal tonality.
