University of Porto Researchers in the Creation of Digital Platform for Screening for Diabetic Retinopathy
University of Porto (U. Porto) researchers, in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) colleagues, are coordinating a project aimed at developing a digital screening platform for diabetic retinopathy, “the leading cause of blindness in the industrialized world,” in order to assist physicians and to attack the disease faster.
The project titled “SCREEN-DR: ImageAnalysis and Machine Learning Platform for Innovation in Diabetic RetinopathyScreening” created an image analysis platform that will allow “an early and more effective treatment for a broader diabetic population,” said Aurélio Campilho, professor of the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) and head of the Center for Biomedical Engineering at the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC), entity that coordinates the project at national level.
To do this, the platform, that will be available to ophthalmologists, will incorporate information and communication technologies, to evaluate the quality of the images collected from the patients’ ocular fundus, to detect the normal images and to assign a degree of severity to the pathology, thus helping the work in the decision-making process.
“SCREEN-DR: Image Analysis and Machine Learning Platform for Innovation in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening” is one of the Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia under the scope of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program. The Principal Investigators are Aurélio Campilho from FEUP and Asim Smailagic from CMU.
