CMU Portugal student Tamás Karácsony recognized at IEEE AI Research Hub Competition

Tamás Karácsony, researcher at INESC TEC and CMU Portugal Affiliated Ph.D. Student in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) has received the “Innovation and Contribution to the field of AI” award from the IEEE AI Research Hub Competition, at GITEX GLOBAL Largest Tech & Startup Show in the World.

Throughout his Ph.D., Tamás Karácsony has been working on innovative AI solutions to develop tools to support the diagnosis of epilepsy, using computer vision techniques, from high-resolution 4K RGB, infrared and depth videos.

Tamás Karácsony’s initial 5-minute research submission was selected as one of the top five presentations, earning him an invitation to deliver a keynote at the final event, held from October 14-18 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. During the keynote, he presented his research in a 10-minute session, followed by a 5-minute Q&A with the panel of judges.

The CMU Portugal student had the opportunity to present his research, centered among other topics on its commercialization potential, before a panel of academic and industry experts in AI and technology entrepreneurship, ultimately winning the ‘Innovation and Contribution to the Field of AI’ award.

According to Karácsony, “this recognition is a true testament to the power of innovation, collaboration, and passion. A huge thank you to the IEEE Entrepreneurship and IEEE Region 8 Entrepreneurship Committee for this incredible opportunity and for bringing together such a diverse, inspiring community of thinkers and doers; and to the judges for their insightful feedback and constructive comments.”

He works with a team of researchers from INESC TEC, the University of Munich, Carnegie Mellon University and Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João (CHUSJ) on this study, whose results were published in Nature Scientific Reports and Image and Vision Computing, among other publications. The study is supervised by João Paulo Cunha, CMU Portugal Scientific Director, professor at FEUP and researcher at INESC TEC, and co-supervised by Fernando De la Torre, professor and researcher at CMU  School of Computer Science.
