4 Personalities connected to CMU Portugal mentioned as the most brilliant minds of the last 20 years

José Manuel Fonseca de Moura, Manuela Veloso, Nuno Sebastião and Susana Sargento were mentioned by Exame Informática.

A recent article of Exame Informática magazine highlighted the work, career and achievements of four personalities linked to Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program (CMU Portugal): José Manuel Fonseca de Moura, Manuela Veloso, Nuno Sebastião and Susana Sargento.

José Manuel Fonseca de Moura, director of CMU Portugal at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), was mentioned as one of the most brilliant minds of the last 20 years. The magazine highlights the work done in developing an algorithm that allows the detection and correction of errors in binary codes, which are generated during a hard drive reading.

Manuela Veloso, CMU Portugal Principal Investigator for the ERIs INSIDE and S2MovingCity, and head of CMU’s Machine Learning Department, is also mentioned in this article. The text mentions her renowned work with artificial intelligence and robotics.

Feedzai’s CEO, Nuno Sebastião, is another of the selected personalities. Feedzai was the first startup to be created as a result of the CMU Portugal, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. Feedzai is specialized in processing large volumes of data with low-latency producing actionable information in real-time. Preventing fraud and keeping commerce safe are their main goals.

Veniam’s co-founder, Susana Sargento, was also highlighted in this article because of her work done in connecting vehicles to the each other by using Internet vehicular mesh networking technologies. Susana, who is also Principal Investigator on CMU Portugal projects DRIVE-IN and S2MovingCity, a faculty member of the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of the University of Aveiro, and a researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações, won The European Union 2016 Woman Innovator award, in March 2016.
