On June 26th 2024, from 11 am to 1 pm, the CMU Portugal Program in collaboration with INESC-ID and the Gender Balance Group from Instituto Superior Técnico, will host the Invited Talk on Gender Balance “Breaking Barriers in Technology: Women in Computing at Carnegie Mellon and Global Perspectives”, by Jeria Quesenberry from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).
Jeria Quesenberry is the Associate Dean of Faculty in the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and a Teaching Professor of Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research focuses on cultural influences in the technology field, with particular emphasis on social inclusion, broadening participation, career values, organizational interventions, and work-life balance. She is the co-author of the book “Kicking Butt in Computer Science: Women in Computing at Carnegie Mellon University”.
The talk will be followed by a Roundtable discussion under the theme “Gender imbalance in STEM: the Portuguese academia experience”, with the participation of the Portuguese Secretary of State for Science, Ana Paiva.

Carol Smith is the AI Division Trust Lab Lead and a Principal Research Scientist at the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Software Engineering Institute. She leads research focused on development practices that result in trustworthy, human-centered, and responsible AI systems. Ms. Smith has been conducting research to improve the human experience with complex systems across industries for over 20 years. Since 2015 she has led research to integrate ethics and improve human experiences with AI systems, autonomous vehicles, and other complex and emerging technologies. Ms. Smith is recognized globally as a leading researcher and user experience advocate and has presented over 250 talks and workshops in over 40 cities around the world. Her writing can be found in publications from organizations including AAAI, ACM, and the UXPA, and she has taught courses and lectured at CMU and other leading institutions. Ms. Smith is currently an ACM Distinguished Speaker and a Working Group member of the IEEE P7008™ Standard. Ms. Smith holds a Master of Science degree in Human-Computer Interaction from DePaul University.





Carol J. Smith, AI Division Trust Lab Lead and a Principal Research Scientist at the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Software Engineering Institute, will be one of the keynote speakers at the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 2024).
The event, held from April 14th to 20th, is one of the World main Software Engineering Conferences and will gather in Lisbon over 1500 Developers. In addition, this edition will have CMU Portugal Scientific Director Rui Maranhão from Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto as Co-President. Supported by the CMU Portugal Program, Carol Smith will host the Talk “Trustworthy by Design” on the new challenges and opportunities brought by dynamic AI systems, on April 19th, at 9 am.
