
Lara Sá Neves, a CMU Portugal Dual Degree Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at Instituto Superior Técnico and at CMU School of Computer Science, won the “Master Thesis Award” of the 16th Edition of the Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge. This award distinguishes innovative projects focused on AI, cyber-physical systems, and health technology, aligning with Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS’s commitment to applied research and real-world solutions.
Lara’s winning Master’s thesis, which she completed at FEUP, focused on iHOMER, a pioneering algorithm designed to learn, reorganize information, and adjust classifications in real-time. iHOMER ensures both explainability and accuracy, making it highly effective even in rapidly changing, dynamic environments.
Passionate about transparent and adaptive AI, Lara is now dedicating her Ph.D. to advancing trustworthy machine learning and creating impactful healthcare solutions through research and innovation. Her research will be developed at Instituto de Telecomunicações, supervised by Professors André Martins (Técnico), Goreti Marreiros (Instituto Politécnico do Porto), and at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science, supervised by Eric P.
