CMU Portugal has a new round of €800 thousand to support Exploratory projects in ICT

The Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program has an Open Call between May 19th and June 30th for Exploratory Research Projects (ERPs) in strategic emerging areas of ICT, funded through Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). This is the second Call for ERPs projects launched under the third phase of the Program that started in 2018 and will convene through 2030.

The total investment available for Portuguese research institutions is up to €400 thousand euros. The participating researchers from Carnegie Mellon University will be funded independently by the CMU Portugal Program at Carnegie Mellon University at a level similar to the Portuguese team.

The 2019 Call for Exploratory Projects featured a total of 38 applications, 7 of which were recommended for funding by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia under the scope of the CMU Portugal Program. The projects were led at 12 Portuguese research units from all over the country in collaboration with 4 different departments at Carnegie Mellon University. (News article here).

ERPs are designed to assist teams of researchers from Portuguese institutions, Carnegie Mellon University and industry partners, to bootstrap high-impact potential research activities of strategic relevance for the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program. For this Call, the CMU Portugal is seeking proposals in the area of ICT, with a focus on the opportunities provided by the data economy as a driver for growth and change. The submitted proposals must include one or more Portuguese research institutions from different entities and one partner CMU faculty team.

It is expected that up to 8 projects will be supported, with the maximum funding for Portuguese research institutions for each project being €70.000,00 euros for consortia with more than one Portuguese research institution and 50.000,00 for consortium with a single research institution. The projects will have a maximum duration of 12 months.

Previous Exploratory Research Projects under the Program

Since 2006, the CMU Portugal Program has launched nine calls and has supported 74 research projects. The new Exploratory projects will further support CMU Portugal’s mission to place Portugal at the forefront of research and technological development in ICT.
