Daniel Chechelnitsky

Daniel is a Ph.D. student in Language Technologies as part of the CMU Portugal Program. He is broadly interested in computational social science, natural language processing, and human-computer interaction. He holds an M.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from University of Michigan, and a B.A. in Linguistics from Macalester College.

André Duarte

I’m a PhD student at IST and LTI@CMU. I do research in Natural Language Processing and I have a great interest towards the Responsible AI field.

João Coelho

I hold a MSc degree in Computer Science and Engineering from IST, focused in Artificial Intelligence. During my MSc thesis I’ve worked on Neural Information Retrieval, applied to the Geographic domain and I will pursue my Ph.D.  focusing on Neural Information Retrieval.

John Mendonça

I received my MSc. (2020) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, with a major in Systems, Decision and Control and a minor in Computer Engineering. During my Master’s I worked with DefinedCrowd, developing methods to detect crowdsourcing fraud. I’m currently working in the MAIA research project at INESC-ID.

Diogo Tavares

Finishing my MSc. in Informatics. My research interests mainly lie in Natural Language Understanding and Dialog State Tracking, and how these can establish genuine rapport between us and non-human agents.

Diogo Silva

I got a Bachelors’s degree in Computer Science from the Nova School of Science and Technology. While pursuing my Master’s I got introduced to machine learning and its uses for conversational chatbots, which I got interested in. During that period I was also invited to be part of a project on the subject of language generation. During my Ph.D., I hope to improve language generation approaches and to help break the human-machine gap on conversational agents.

Gabriel Moreira

Gabriel is a Ph.D. student at Instituto Superior Técnico and at the Language Technologies Institute, Carnegie Mellon University. He received a double M.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from ISAE-Supaero and IST and worked as a research intern at Airbus. His research interest lies at the intersection of computer vision and NLP.

Patrick Fernandes

I’m a PhD student at LTI@CMU and IST. I’m interested in machine learning and natural language processing, with a particular focus on machine translation and interpretability.

Luís Borges

Luís Borges is a CMU Portugal student in Language Technologies, having started his PhD in 2019. His Master’s degree was focused on the application of Natural Language Processing and Deep Learning techniques on the topic of fake news detection. For his PhD, he is working on Neural Information Retrieval, also leveraging NLP and Deep Learning tools.
