This project concerns a framework for designing and operating future smart distributed electric power systems. A collaborative effort will be targeted toward introducing the fundamentals of a smart distribution network system. Such system should be capable of integrating demand-response, and many new distributed resources, such as Electric Vehicles (EVs), Photovoltaic’s (PVs) and small-scale wind generation, without creating any reliability problems. New functionalities, such as Just-in-Time (JIT), Just-in-Place (JIP) and Just-in-Context (JIC) will be embedded into the distributed resources for their adaptation to the system conditions and for interactive communications between these resources and the distribution companies. More specifically, the project will re-visit fundamentals of transforming today’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA)-enabled operations and control of the electric power distribution systems into a highly flexible network system. Such network system will be enabled by the next-generation SCADA referred to as the (Dynamic Monitoring and Decision Systems-DYMONDS) fundamentally based on the multi-layered sensing, communication and control. The DYMONDS will be embedded into many (groups of) physical components including wires, loads and energy sources.
