The new Carnegie Mellon Portugal (CMU Portugal) visual identity enhances the beginning of a new phase of the international partnership, which was renewed in 2018 through 2030, in an agreement signed between Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the Portuguese Government through Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).
The main objective of the new logotype is to highlight the importance of the collaboration between Portugal and Carnegie Mellon focusing on the ideas of partnership, collaboration and network. The new image is a reflection of the strategy and vision behind the next phase of the program, which is expected to be ground-breaking.
The connection between these two partners, the two “dots,” will lead to new paths, to research, to talent development, and to innovative possibilities. Since the main area of focus of the Program is Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), the new branding represents technology through the use of a simplified icon inspired by networks and graphs. This recognizable representation of technology works perfectly with the previously mentioned concepts we hope to explore.
The new Carnegie Mellon Portugal branding maintains the strong connection to Carnegie Mellon University’s main brand through the use of their word mark and color palette, while still having its own identity. The new brand is dynamic and versatile, unfolding into multiple applications like the Program’s projects logos, icons representing the areas of practice, and by doing so creating a strong and recognizable brand across different media.
This new identity will be the visual support of the program´s mission: placing Portugal at the forefront of innovation in key focused areas of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by promoting an innovation ecosystem with a tight coupling between cutting-edge research, world-class graduate education, and highly innovative companies in the data-driven economy.
