Master of Science in Information Technology – Information Security – ICTI: Information & Communication Technologies Institute – Carnegie Mellon University

Master of Science in Information Technology – Information Security (MSIT-IS)
In the fast-paced world of information technology, new strategies are needed not only to manage and implement these systems but also to protect the valuable data contained within them. Working in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon’s INI, the Faculdade de Ciências at the Universidade de Lisboa offers the Masters of Science in Information Technology-Information Security to prepare students for a future in this dynamic and challenging field.

Based in the lively research environment of Lisbon, students have the best of both worlds as they take classes taught locally by professors at the University of Lisbon as well as at Carnegie Mellon via video-conferencing technology. Upon completion of the program, students receive two degrees: a Master of Science in Information Technology – Information Security (MSIT-IS) from Carnegie Mellon and the corresponding Master of Science from FCUL of Mestre em Segurança Informática (a Bologna second cycle officially accredited degree).

Divided into three main components (core courses, electives, graduate project) students progress from building to exploration to implementation over an intense 16 months of coursework. Beginning with core courses, students develop a strong foundation before choosing their electives and pairing off to complete research or development based projects. Having recently added two new business electives to the current offerings, students will have even more opportunities to specialize and refine their professional direction.

Blending education in information security technology, business management and policy, MSIT-IS students are prepared to enter the field in technology development, financial services, professional services/consulting as well as research and manufacturing. By the end of the program, students will be able to assess the information security risks faced by an organization, evaluate what technological tools are needed to protect against these risks, manage and develop a secure information infrastructure and understand information security challenges in software engineering as well as distributed and embedded systems.
