Manuela Veloso Speaks at AI Conference in Lisbon
CMU Portugal Program Principal Investigator and Carnegie Mellon University faculty, Manuela Veloso is a leading expert on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and has participated in many conferences in these subjects. In this capacity, Professor Veloso was a speaker at the Associação para a Promoção e Desenvolvimento da Sociedade de Informação (APDSI) Conference, held in Lisbon in May 2017.

The APDSI Conference, titled “Social and Technological Challenges in the Conception of Robots”, featured several Portuguese academics from the robotics area and the industry presence of IBM, as well as the support of the Lisbon city council. Professor Veloso presented her cobots, or collaborative robots, and explained why it is important that robots ask for help – it creates a relationship with humans, working towards helping humans trust and accept the machines. However, Manuela Veloso points out that “we cannot create and accept robots that cannot explain themselves.”
