Manuela Veloso: Potentials and Threats of AI
The possibilities and threats of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are currently controversial among experts in the area. To better understand what AI really is, the online publication Peopleware.com interviewed one of the world ‘s greatest references in this area, that will be in Portugal in October for the Business Transformation Summit 2017.

Professor Manuela Veloso, Head of the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA, has received several academic awards, has published more than 250 scientific articles and created the CoBots. She was president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and founder of the Coral Research Laboratory. She is also responsible for RoboCup, an annual robot soccer championship, which had the first edition in 1997 in Japan.

In the interview, Professor Veloso maintains her position on AI, despite what other thinkers say publicly, like Elon Musk, that recently warned of the dangers that super-intelligent AI may bring for humans. “No, I do not share this opinion because I am optimistic about people. AI is a great risk because the technology can be quite powerful, but the use of this technology only depends on human minds. There are people who may misuse the technology, but like with any other technologies, the use can be equally dramatic. My hope is that humans using this technology will make good use of it.”
