Manuela Veloso: Artificial Intelligence Specialist
Professor Manuela Veloso, head of the Machine Learning Department at the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University and CMU Portugal Program PI in two research projects, was recently interviewed for the weekend magazine Notícias Magazine. This last publication printed a special on the artificial intelligence and it is already part of our daily lives in the form of advanced algorithms.

Manuela Veloso is one of the specialists featured, and she shares the belief that the work, or profession, as we know it, is not threatened by the emergence of ever more sophisticated artificial intelligence systems, but also agrees with the need for regulation. “It is really necessary for our society,” Professor Veloso says, “that just as the pharmaceutical industry does not release untested and unsafe medicine, that there will be global societies that will not allow for there to be unmanageable and potentially harmful technological systems. »

Professor Veloso will speak at the United Nations’ AI for Good Global Summit, on June 7 to 9, 2017. This event takes place at ITU, the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICT) in Switzerland. The summit aims to analyse ways to control the application of algorithms to society.
