CMU Portugal has new 11 Affiliated Ph.D. students

The CMU Portugal Program welcomes a new group of 11 students selected under the second edition of the Affiliated Ph.D. Programs, starting their studies in the 2022/23 academic year. This initiative offers Ph.D. scholarships in selected cutting-edge areas of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), related to the scope of the CMU Portugal Program.

Under this initiative funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), students will be entirely hosted by a Portuguese University, with a research period at Carnegie Mellon of up to one year. Upon the Ph.D. conclusion, the Portuguese host University will award candidates a Ph.D. diploma.

The Affiliated Ph.D. Programs initiative aims to strengthen the collaboration between Portuguese higher education institutions and Portuguese companies through a strong partnership with Carnegie Mellon University. During their Ph.D., the new students will collaborate with companies such as Altice Labs, Nokia, Build up labs, WowSystems, Ingeniarius and Logimade-Med. Candidates were encouraged to apply with work plans involving the collaboration of Portuguese ICT companies, and most have answered this challenge.

This year, 11 Scholarships were granted to Portuguese students in the following CMU Portugal research areas: Computer Science (3), Human-Computer Interaction (3), Electrical and Computer Engineering (2), Robotics (2), and Engineering and Public Policy (1).

In Portugal, the Ph.D. candidates will be hosted by seven different institutions: Instituto Superior Técnico (4), Universidade de Coimbra (2), Universidade de Aveiro (1), College of Social and Human Sciences of the NOVA University of Lisbon (1), ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (1), Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (1), and LARSyS (1).

During their one-year research period at CMU, candidates will be hosted also by seven CMU Departments: Human-Computer Interaction Institute (3), Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (2), Robotics Institute (2), Computer Science Department (1), Institute for Software Research (1), Engineering and Public Policy (1), and Biomedical Engineering Departments (1).

All candidates were selected after a rigorous selection process by a committee of faculty members from Portuguese Universities and Carnegie Mellon University, with an overall acceptance rate of 30%.
