Ying Xu received her Bachelor of Engineering degree and an MPhil degree in Design from Wuhan University of Technology. She is working on her Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering at the Interactive Technologies Institute, Técnico-University of Lisbon, with Prof. Nuno Jardim Nunes as her supervisor and Prof. Jessica Hammer as her co-supervisor.
I am a landscape architect and researcher, specializing in the intersection of digital media, ecological design, and cultural heritage. With expertise in Ecology, Design and Human-Computer Interaction, I explore innovative ways to communicate natural heritage and foster sustainability through interactive technologies.
Mathilde is an Affiliated PhD candidate in Digital Media at ITI and CMU. She holds an MA in Visual Communication from Intuit Lab Paris and an MA in Sustainable Design from the University of Brighton. Outside of Academia, Mathilde worked as a designer for Nesta and Policy Lab to bring more innovation and human-centered approaches to UK policymaking.
Electric Engineering and Computer Science MSc. who has information and interaction technologies for childhood education as a main research interest. His doctoral work regards the co-design of a playful informal learning management system for primary education – a tool to help integrate everyday and implicit learning activities into educational systems and, by introducing interactive narratives set in fantastical universes starring characters to whom children are bonded by their learning, engage children in the management of these activities. The CMU Portugal program provided a unique opportunity to work with a reference scholar, and respective research group, on the topic of transformational play.
Eduardo Silva graduated in the integrated master course of biomedical engineering and is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Digital Media at FEUP. With the theme “On forecasting emergency department visits”, his dissertation is focused on the construction and analysis of forecasting systems for healthcare demand in the emergency department, where it was possible to embark on the area of data science, classical or machine learning forecasting techniques, thus expanding an already vast area of knowledge.
Duarte is a LARSyS/INESC-ID researcher with an MSc in Interactive Media Design, blending HCI, Design Research, and User-Centered Design. Currently, he is exploring AI-powered approaches to enhance knowledge personalisation through transdisciplinary methods.
Bea is a creative director and a CMU Portugal Dual Degree PhD candidate in Human-Computer Interaction. She works on ocean literacy games that foster a sense of interconnectedness with the ocean. She also uses photography to reflect on people’s embodied experiences of the sea. Her research focuses on posthuman HCI, hydrocommons and more-than-human entanglements.
Before returning to academia, she worked internationally as a creative director for 2 decades. Starting in advertising, she then transitioned to environmental campaigning, where she worked on ideating communication campaigns for NGOs such as Greenpeace and WWF.
Now I am an HCI design researcher at ITI, LARSyS. Before joining the CMU Portugal program, I got my master degree in design at Tongji University and experienced multiple digital projects (Social media, social innovation and sustainability, etc.) with my interaction design skills in China. My current research is triggered by digital technologies, HCI, sustainability, and multi-disciplinary practices. I appreciated the opportunity and am glad to meet the fabulous network.
I am an HCI Researcher at INESC-ID with an MSc. Degree in Aerospace Engineering from IST. Highly motivated by technological challenges, I designed an approach for remote virtual collaboration during my master thesis. During my exchange program in India, I have enriched my adaptability to new environments and developed great intercultural sensitivity.
