António Pedro Brites de Andrade de Melo Alvim is a Master of Software Engineering student with the Carnegie Mellon-Portugal program. Originally from Pombal, a city 40 km from Coimbra, António received his undergraduate degree in Informatics Engineering from the University of Coimbra in 2004. From September 2004 till now, António worked as a consultant for Novabase. He was working in the CRM, mainly in the financial and incentive Compensation areas. António’s research interests lie mainly in project management and the Software Engineering process. He chose the Master of Software Engineering program because, "I believe that while practical experience has given me valuable knowledge, I felt the need to improve my work methodologies, and this particular course corresponds to what I am currently looking for." Aside from being an enthusiastic movie and video game fan, António also enjoys cooking and outdoor recreation activities. Upon completing his M.S. from the Carnegie Mellon-Portugal program, António intends to establish himself as a successful and reputable Software Engineer by participating in several diverse projects in the coming years. António will be attending the University of Coimbra, followed by Carnegie Mellon University for the M.S. in Software Engineering program.

Carlos Simões is a student in the Master of Software Engineering program, studying at the University of Coimbra and Carnegie Mellon. He holds a degree in Computer Engineering from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Since completing his undergraduate degree, he has worked in different environments, including a European research project, developing infrastructures to support industrial virtual enterprises; a major assurance company in a business intelligence project; a Project Manager developing online travel agencies websites; and for the past few years he has been a consultant with with Novabase. His research interests include programming languages, software development, and project management. Originally from Lisbon, Simões is enjoys traveling, reading, snowboarding, and listening to modern music.

Higino Silva is a software project manager, currently working in TMN billing department. Previously worked in the American Management Systems consultancy firm as programmer analyst in product development division. He holds a B.Sc. in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Aveiro, and a post-graduation in Information Systems from Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. With a total of 8 years of working experience his main focus is on Service Oriented Architectures, real-time programming and application integration. In his free time, he likes to play football, and travel as much as possible.

Ignacio Luis Cavero, an MSE masters student, received his undergraduate degree in Systems Engineering from the Metropolitan University in Caracas, Venezuela. His previous work experience includes software development, mostly for the web. His main research interest focuses on special tools used for aiding the software development cycle. Cavero states why he chose the MSE program: “I feel passionate not only about the software development itself, but also about the processes and approaches that the developers follow in order to get things done.“ Originally from Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, Cavero enjoys playing sports, listening to music, and watching classic cinema.

Filipe Martins is a project manager at Novabase, where he has worked since 1999. At Novabase he has started as a programmer and since then assumed different roles, namely Technical Analyst and Architect, Business Analyst in financial area, where he has some experience, among others.

João Brito received his undergraduate degree in Computer Science Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Brito has worked for Critical Software for the last seven years, initially in the High Performance Computing area developing MPI middleware. Later he developed a helicopter simulator and moved to the embedded and real-time systems area, developing on-board satellite software. His research interests include high performance computing as well as embedded and real-time systems. Brito chose the Carnegie Mellon-Portugal program because of his desire to improve his professional skills as a software engineer so that he may become a technical leader for future projects. Besides the time he spends with his family, Brito also enjoys traveling and reading.

João Carlos Almeida, an MSE masters student, received his undergraduate degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. He worked for Novabase in Portugal as a software consultant where he was responsible for developing, maintaining and supporting web-based applications designed for managing public projects at a regional level, specializing in Visual Studio platforms. Almeida also worked as a software consultant with Accenture in Brazil; in this position he specified architectures and development rules to deploy a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) with Brazil’s top telecommunication corporation. After completing his MSE with the Carnegie Mellon-Portugal program, Almeida plans to utilize the best practices within the voice recognition field in order to be a part of the few who steer and influence the industry. Along with playing guitar, he also enjoy traveling and playing football.

João Silva graduated in Coimbra, Portugal. For a brief period, during his studies, he was a school teacher, having later joined Critical Software. While at Critical, for whom he still works, his career has been quite successful. He has worked on different kinds of projects, ranging from helicopter simulators to navy frigates and telecommunications systems. He has lived in a number of places, being currently very happy at the sunny Lagos. Sci-fi and C++ are two of his main interests, although he is also very fond of traveling and board games.

"Mike" Sousa is enrolled in the Master of Software Engineering program, studying at the University of Coimbra and at Carnegie Mellon. He holds a degree in Industrial Computer Systems and Programming from the University of Porto’s Faculdade de Engenharia. With several years’ work experience in computers and programming, he is most recently the CIO of the Universidade Aberta and of DeskBit - I.S., Lda. His research interests, also focused on technologies and computers, are in the areas of developing software systems, especially with those that interact with machines and equipments or that control and manage data. de Sousa came to the MSE program to complement his programming skills and to take his career to the next level. Originally from Santa Maria de Lamas, he enjoys reading, traveling, movies, sports and computers.

Miguel is a BI Consultant at Novabase where he works on Data Warehouse design for telecommunications. In 2005 he graduated in Informatics and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. Miguel has acquired a taste for backpacking since graduation having visited almost 10 different countries in the last year and a half, a taste which (un)fortunately will have to be kept on hold in the next year and a half. Besides travelling, Miguel enjoys practicing all kinds of sports. Lately he has been practicing regularly Futsal, Surf and Squash.

Paulo Casanova, a Master of Software Engineering candidate studying in Lisbon and in Pittsburgh, received his undergraduate degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico. Since 2001, he has worked as a Software Engineer and IT Consultant, first for Link Consulting and then for Novabase. He hopes to become involved in software development methodologies research, saying of this Masters program, "It fits perfectly the area I’ve been dedicating myself to." In addition to computers, Casanova enjoys the piano.

He worked at Accenture as an IT consultant where his main responsibilities were with the design, implementation and tests of several technology systems (especially within the Portuguese Ministry of Justice).
